Yes I've had a wait and see attitude for 20+ years now I think....there's still a long way to go even if this works....they're still in the "proving it's possible" phase, then comes the making it practical phase....

I have been hearing about fusion energy being the "energy of the future" since the 1964 New York Worlds Fair. Too my memory, it was either ConEd or GE who had a micro-burst fusion reactor set up to bright light and go bang for a couple hundred people at a time. 50 years on and we still haven't even reached zero sum on power in - power out.

Possibly useful in trapping liquid metal robots from the future....?

It will if it works, enable fossil fuel free energy, and improve air quality....I don't think it has any effect on global warming though....but we haven't seen the risks associated with fusion energy production yet....and that could change everything...people keep hoping for a perfect solution, that just doesn't exist...If that were to be realized we would be ramping up nuclear power on a large scale now....

Forgetting the target of making increased power for a moment; on any device dealing with high temperatures, containment has always been the most critical part of the problem.
