Are tanks susceptible to simple counter measures?

03/14/2022 8:21 AM

Could a couple of blokes with a smoke bomb and a length of rail from a disused train line jam up a tanks continuous track?

I see that the first tanks anticipated this

Also, could you effectively disable the main gun by throwing a hand full of gravel down the muzzle?

Combined arms doctrine does not have armor operating without infantry support and air cover as well that would suppress one's ability to get 'close enough' to the tracked vehicles for that kind of disabling action. That's where a stand-off weapon like the Javelin makes the tread-heads sweat. That being said, from what I've seen on the news, the Russian army does not seem to be executing combined arms tactics very well. One lesson learned from the conflict is that Putin has pulled back the curtain on his armed forces' readiness and training effectiveness. Though the Russian Bear may have a large force and lots of equipment, but they are not as effective as once thought. This conflict is going to provide a cornucopia of case studies for the U.S. Army's Command and General Staff College and the Army War College for decades. It is interesting to note that in 2007 when I was starting CGSC, much of our studies for notional planning and 'fictional' strategies revolved around the Georgia/Azerbaijan region of the world. And then it happened but the U.S. was not directly involved. Have you ever noticed who was in the Oval Office when Russia has embarked on any of its territorial acquisitions?

That would depend on the size of gravel… the main cannon only lasts a certain a number of shots…. Gravel can reduce it that count, but a certain size of gravel, can impede it… quickly.

land it depends on if it’s a smooth bore, like on the Abrams M1 tanks, or a spiral bore…

just have to keep in mind, for every new offense weapon or technique, there will soon be a defensive counter-measure developed to eliminate or reduce it effectiveness. Hence,… creating an arms race.

Several years ago,I read where an M1 Abrams tank was disabled by a single shot. The projectile was small caliber,no spalling, and was an orange metal. The computer was disabled by the round, and the tank was immobile. It was either the luckiest shot in the world,or someone knew the vulnerable points of the tanks' armor. The tank was quickly covered by canvass and guarded till it could be removed to a secure sight for study.I have not seen anything else about it recently.

A lot of that must still be relevant.

Did anyone ever create a sort of paint grenade to cover the windows and periscope?

It's like castrating a tiger, theoretically possible, but the difficulty is getting close enough...

I have not been close to a tank for more than 50 years. I will sneak up to the tank in the blind spot if I am allowed to Ctrl Alt Delete.
