Seeking info on Hot Melt Adhesive

12/09/2007 8:57 PM

Hey,

I am selecting an adhesive for my application. I am planning to adhere an Aluminum sheet to Aluminum plate, Gasket (asbestos sheet) to Aluminum plate and PTFE sheet to Aluminum plate.

I am planning to use Nordson's hot melt for this application. Can anyone please advice on the type of hot melt adhesive available and what should be the most suitable for my application.

Some literature or links on the above would be also be great.

I specified and impimented hot melt adhesive for several applications years ago when I worked with automotive flooring in Greenville, SC. I got all my information from the sales reprentative in the area, then did my own research. Fortunately for me, there was a local company, The Reynolds Company, and I had a wealth on information available to me for each of my specific applications. You can also follow this link from a google search.

Southeast United States. I wasn't sure if you were in any area that I could recommend some one close. Unfortunately, I have no hot melt contacts in Malaysia, although I assume you have no issues with doing business within the USA. I think Bostik is in the Greenville, SC area also. I was always happy with the service and quality from The Reynolds Company.

Another thing to keep in mind. Make sure your equipment can keep the hot melt you select in the appropriate temperature zone. Most hot melt adhesives lose their adhesive properties when they are kept and/or applied above the recommended limits. I have seen application failures due to: glue pots too hot and application guns too hot - both due to equipment issues and operators thinking they could make adjustments (you know, make it hotter so it flows faster ).

Good Luck!

I am currently talking to Bostik about the glue. They have a dealer here in Malaysia. For the glue dispenser, we are actually talking to Nordson.

What is your recommendation on Nordson? Any idea how they are?

The sales guy seems to be OK. I am more concern on the after sales service. Most of the companies are really bad in this.

I have not used Nordson, although I did not hear anything bad about their equipment.

When searching through replies to this question, that was the first thing that came into my mind............asbestos...........legal!!!!

Mind you I wouldn't mind getting hold of a few sheets of CAF jointing material. Certainly better than some of the crap jointing available today. I worked with asbestos packing and jointing materials up until it was banned; also had 15 years of working with asbestos lagging ( this I didn't go much on)...........but packing and jointing, that's different.

Asbestos is still used in the US, although it is banned in certain applications.

Whats scarier is because its a mineral, you can throw it out in the regular trash without any hazmat red tape.

You may want to consider having the PTFE deposited on the plate using a powder coating process.

powder coating will provide a more durable non stick coating @ a lower cost than laminating on a layer.

another option is PTFEimpregnated fiberglass tape [adhesive backed] which is available up to 300mm wide.

i would also try Henkel corp

they have heat and non activated epoxy foamed adhesives in sheet form for the metal to metal

the ptfe will be much harder -(the adhesive typically has to have a surface tension lower than the substrate to stick or wetout the surface) you can also try dupont zonyl flourosurfactants ( FSA) on aluminum.. dilute with IPA and rinse with water after coating

Avery the label company(they have an offine in troy mi) also make film adhesives

I'm thinking that Dow Corning's silicone adhesives would work well for your application. They are very versatile and working very well at bonding metals. This website is useful for picking the right one for you: Silicone Adhesive
