Digitization in electrical system

07/28/2022 5:23 AM

I would like to know if there is any type of digitization opportunity in electrical systems of large scale industry that can be implemented or some of you have already implemented.

I could not find any such opportunity with respect to electrical system maintenance.

Sincere thanks for any suggestions.

I think you are looking for information on smart grid technology.

Thanks...But to be precise , I am looking for any suggestion on electrical distribution system inside a refinery/petrochemicals industry.

As far back as 1975 I was involved in collecting information from a large industrial power system with multiple generators. It used sensors and processing to help determine the root cause of an internal power interruption by developing a precise (millisecond) sequence of the events that occurred, just breakers that opened at the 15kV level. Often enough, a single fault would result in the complete collapse of the power system, interrupting every continuous process in the plant and causing significant revenue loss.

It took a relay protection engineer to figure an event out, but by collecting more information and high speed analog values, the task would have been easier.

It that what you mean by digitization?

IEEE Industrial Application Society has many such papers written on the subject, maybe not with digitization in the key words.

Most of the large O&G companies, refineries, Petrochemical companies, Power Generating companies do have software to manage their maintenance system.

The system includes scheduling, monitoring as well as providing checklists and procedures for preventive maintenance.

Also, the system can collect data online that helps health monitoring of expensive equipment and predictive maintenance.

It includes shutdown planning and MIS components.

Thanks dear...We do have a CMMS which does the job of eliminating paper but this is not a new idea. Also we can install sensors on motor which gives the value of its vital parameters on smart phone.

Apart from these countable idea, I worry if there is no any much scope for digitization pertained to electrical systems especially in industries.

Usually efforts like digitization are driven by economic considerations, so perhaps if you think of automation that makes the system easier to operate, lowers the delivered energy cost, provides higher reliability, then you will likely find suitable digitization projects that have been implemented already.

l not sure exactly what your question refers to - digitisation of what? Digital control systems in plants are old hat, and that includes the electrical side, not just the operating/SCADA side of things, though it can be integrated. There are any number of sensors that can be (and are) used for indications, such as higher-than-expected motor currents (but still low enough not to cause a trip) that could indicate conveyor drag or blocked pipes requiring more power to push liquids/gases through, trip counters on equipment for predictive maintenance, on-line vibration sensors on larger motors, on-line thermal and corona discharge sensors, transformer winding and oil temperature sensors, etc.

All these and many others allow for not only more automated control of processes, but also for better system performance management and preemptive electrical warning/protection. Google "AI in power systems" to see some developments in machine learning and the like in this field (I was surprised by some applications!)
