What is it?

08/19/2022 1:20 PM

My wife had this nick-nack item around for a long time, and says she was told by her grandfather that it is a windshield defogger from an antique car (maybe a Ford Model T?). Can anyone identify it? We don't want to just throw it away if there were someone out there who would collect it or use this for a restoration.

Are those candles on either side of the device?

Yes, those are candles. This does seem to be a rather primitive approach to windshield defogging/defrosting, but it would probably work.

I don't think you would have an open flame inside an automobile....for one it would easily go out, and there would be wax all over the holder, and you would hardly want a light in front of your eyes while driving at night...For another thing it would be easy to gather hot air from the engine and blow it on the windshield...Although early autos had oil fueled lanterns on the car they were always outside and protected with glass...now that is not to say that somebody (gramps) didn't make this as a one off application, but I find the claim dubious...much easier to just wipe the glass with a cloth...

Candles produce heat which could defog the window, but would also produce smoke which would be counterproductive.

A good, hard candle wax doesn't produce a lot of smoke, and the glass would be in front of it, not above it. Just think about candle lamps with a chimney. They do get a little soot after a while, but mostly stay pretty transparent. I guess the only concern over time would be soot on the inside of the car roof, but if it were black (standard color for Model T!), then you'd never notice it.

Is it possible to "analyse" the candle wax to see if it's a special type which will not "black" the glass.

You could just light one and hold a mirror above it for a while.

Flintstone High beam,Low beam?

or

One if by land, two if by sea.(Paul Revere).

Or

A signalling device for the red light district in old New York, similar to the taxi lights used today.Placed above the room doors.

One=open for business,two=occupied.

Blow out the candle on your way out.

Besides heat, combustion also produces moisture, which would condense on the windshield, which is the reverse of the conjectured defogging. If it does turn out to be automotive-related, I am sure the AACA antique auto club would be interested. I think they are in Hershey, PA.

Oh, if there were only an antique automotive authority here at GlobalSpec.

I'm sure he also had a smart answer when she asked why granny is happy today. Defogging? (LMAO). S.M.
