Where in the world....

09/03/2022 4:57 AM

......is this really

I suspect that it's the Blue Nelson lake in New Zealand.

But the highest resolution picture I can find claims it's the Flathead lake in Montana.

At least 5 other countries lay claim to it.

Anyone know, and can we prove it?

TIN EYE is showing 1417 possible sources to take your pic. https://tineye.com/search/e71b4f768ddcbeb0d11ab0b30b40a0fc73ac536b?sort=score&order=desc&page=1

Thanks: TIN EYE seems to be a better resource than Google lens for this sort of thing, especially as you can sort the images according to size, earliest, latest etc.

The earliest copy of this picture (according to TIN EYE) is the 18th of October 2009: unfortunately the caption on it in Russian when translated just says "hover boat" .

One of the highest resolution images is from this interesting site

https://traveltriangle.com/blog/59-weirdest-places-across-the-world/

It claims the lake is the Blue lake in New Zealand's Nelson lakes national park.

But this article

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/gallery/2013/jun/12/clearest-lake-in-the-world-in-pictures

from June 2013 in the Guardian claims

"Here are the first-ever photos of this newly discovered natural wonder"

I am convinced that New Zealand's Blue Lake is the clearest known in the world, but, since copies of the photo pre-date that article by nearly four years, I don't think it can be from there.

You can prove it by matching the surrounding landscape and colors of the water.... https://www.google.com/maps/uv?pb=!1s0x6d3a938d156bf0af%3A0x2a00ef86ab637be0!3m1!7e115!4shttps%3A%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipNxlpLnmnPoPpQ5u1wlzMXETkuHRIbkItohRBgu%3Dw260-h175-n-k-no!5sBlue%20Nelson%20lake%20in%20New%20Zealand%20-%20Google%20Search!15sCgIgAQ&imagekey=!1e10!2sAF1QipNxlpLnmnPoPpQ5u1wlzMXETkuHRIbkItohRBgu&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiiroCzwfn5AhW2jokEHQdoCX8Q7ZgBKAB6BAgMEAI

I wasn't trying to prove anything, he asked how it could be proven...I would guess somewhere in Canada, but it could be any number of places...One thing that caught my eye is those look like Norfolk pines across the lake, which could mean the New Zealand area...

According to Google lens the lake is Rotomairewhenua (Blue Lake) Nelson Lakes National Park, New Zealand. Image posted by Instagram user @miraclesofnature

Re: Where in the world....

Correct me if I'm wrong: I think that looking at the shadow of the boat on the bottom then if the photo was taken in the Northern Hemisphere, it was taken from the East or South East side of the lake. But if it was taken in the Southern Hemisphere then I'm thinking West or North West side of the lake.

I can't find a similar view around the Blue Nelson Lake in New Zealand; the terrain around the Flathead lake in Montana is too flat, and, the terrain around the Konigssee lake in Germany is too steep.

Huh? How can you say the terrain around Konigssee is too steep when the post 2 picture is identical to yours in the OP?

Because this is what Konigssee actually looks like from the SE corner

This is the problem: lots of places claim that same picture is a picture of their lake.

The clarity of the water just means it hasn't rained for a while, and there aren't likely to be any currents flowing through the lake at this time....

The Guardian article I mentioned in post #11 says this about New Zealand's Nelson Blue lake

Blue Lake is located 1,200m above sea level and receives water from another lake above it

Photograph: Klaus Thymann /Project Pressure

The top lake is above the tree line, meaning its water is relatively unblemished by run-off from overhanging foliage

From the top lake, water is filtered through a moraine (glacial debris), before finally creating the Blue Lake

There is a hole where water flows out of the Blue Lake. The entire lake is replaced around every 24 hours

Incidentally restrictions on access to this lake would almost certainly forbid putting a boat in it.

..."Incidentally restrictions on access to this lake would almost certainly forbid putting a boat in it."...

Yes, but how long have those restrictions been in place, and how old is this photograph? ...two details needed for this info to be relevant...

The article from June 2013 in the Guardian claims

"Here are the first-ever photos of this newly discovered natural wonder"

and, the earliest version of this picture from TIN EYE is October 2009.

Of course this whole thread is about false information on the internet, so, the above could be wrong, but, on the whole I think I believe most of the relevant stuff in that article.

Here's one from jan 2007....

..."Blue Lake lies within the rohe (tribal area) of Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō. As part of the iwi's 2010 treaty settlement, the lake passed into tribal ownership and was then given back to the Crown. The lake was traditionally used in ceremonies to cleanse the bones and release the spirits of the dead, so they could begin their journey to Hawaiki, and the iwi regard its waters as tapu (sacred). (Blue Lake was used only for males; Lake Constance was used for females.) Its Māori name, Rotomairewhenua, means "the lake of peaceful lands".[5]

In August 2014, the official name for Blue Lake was altered to Rotomairewhenua / Blue Lake, following the Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō treaty settlement with the Crown.[6] "...

Thanks, looking at the whole lake

It looks as though that 2007 picture was taken from the SE corner.

But if I'm right about the picture in my OP being from the West or NW side then I think there are too many trees to the right side of the picture to be this lake.

Re: Where in the world....

I've changed my mind about the above, but still can't get the editor to work properly in this thread (even in EDGE).

I stupidly assumed that the picture in post #14 (part of which is copied above) was taken from the South: it's actually from the North. (Ahaa editing the post within the 15 minutes brings back the editing icons)

So, the sentence "It looks as though that 2007 picture was taken from the SE corner." should read "It looks as though that 2007 picture was taken from the bottom left corner." (which is the NW).

In google earth I can nearly get a view that looks like the OP picture.

But I'm still not convinced
