Bulk Powder Conveying

12/10/2007 1:08 PM

I'm trying to put an additive in to a 4" bulk powder dilute phase conveying line. It there a divice I can build in my shop to do this? Now I'm adding it during my milling process and I think the additive is slowing the milling time. I need to experiment without buying a bunch of high dollar equipment. Any ideas.

The dense phase conveying system in my plant "slugs" material thru it. It does seem if delivery is consistent in your system (unlike mine) your idea of introducing the additive (under pressure) into the system might work especially if there is some mixing inherent in your downstream equipment. Is your additive liquid or powder?

Depending on how important uniformity needs to be you might introduce additive powder with a little auger (1 in.) into a holding bin at the bulk material drop in point.

My additive is powder. It needs to be put in before my testing point. I'm thinking of a small auger w/ airlock to introducing additive before the cyclone which is the last step before entering bulk storage. What do you think?

Introducing the additive with a screw feeder into the dilute phase should work well, but you may want to do some additional mixing using perhaps a static line-line mixer. If you do, be aware that an increase in pressure drop will occur. Depending on design of the mixer, it should be minimal.

Found a smaller blender in the junk pile. Going to place it directly over conveying line with small screw and airlock. Will let everyone know if this theory increases mill production by adding polymer after milling instead of during. Thanks

We use air slides to move some very bad powders (aluminum chloride) and some not so bad (silica). These systems are used to prevent bridging in the bulk bins (a problem with augars) and they are fairly easy to maintain. I suppose that a lot depends on the characteristics of your material. Our system has a series of solenoids along the length of the pipe slide that inject eiher nitrogen for the aluminum chloride or air for the silica. Also pulsing supply is introduced into the storage supply hopper to keep the material loose and flowing and to supply a positive pressure in the system. The end measuring device is a weigh hopper that collects and dumps the weighed material. Dust collection at the vents is also required, usually a series of bag filters.
