Is there a fairly good smart standing wheelchair ?

11/29/2022 2:47 AM

Hi, I am looking for a self-driving (smart) standing wheelchair (or robotic system), which can change its posture to standing/tilting/reclining etc.. and also drive autonomously to goal position.

Do you guys know any?

Try this.

Then make some calls.

You probably have to build it yourself or get in a testing program where they are working on this technology....to date I don't know of any that meet complete autonomous operation criteria you have requested, though there might be some in testing stage of various levels of autonomy....

Do you have some form of movement to be able to input your destination?

If Yes, then; that movement can control the direction of a range of powered wheelchairs. I refer you to Stephen Hawking's ability to drive himself with eye movement.

If No, then; there are emerging technologies that can "read" brain waves. A young Australian boy with C.P. controlled a car by this method.

Finding a standing wheelchair that can also tilt and recline that does all of that well is a matter of shopping around in your area. Look for a seller that imports from Europe as there are several from there.

When you see one look for the pivot points. Some pivot well below the cushion height causing a lot of shear when reclining. And, of course, compression when coming upright again. This is less of a problem if they have flat cushions but very bad if your cushions are carved to fit your shape.

Not a chance, i would say. Motorising a wheelchair is easy enough, but fitting a motorised reclining armchair with additional transport motors is going to result in a massive object which won't go through doors.

Besides, why? One generally does not wish to recline on a wheelchair in public. There is no point in the wheelchair pushing you into the vertical position unless you have sufficient muscle strength to stay standing. If you have that strength then all you may need is a bit of help to rise from the sitting position.

As for autonomous driving in pedestrian areas, words almost fail me. You may get away with it in outdoor areas, but the chances of successful navigation within a building are zero.
