Electrical wall box

12/11/2007 1:17 AM

Hi,I am a South African that wishes to manufacture what we call the electrical wall box. This is a box that houses your Switch socket outlet as well as light switches. It is flush mount (in the wall). It is made of mild steel & has knock outs to accomodate conduit or wire.It is available in 2 standard sizes.100mm x 100mm & 100mm x 50mm.

Please advise on the most cost effective manner in which to manufacture this product. What is the machinery requirement?

Your assistance is appreciated.

Regards

Hi,

The most approriate solution is a CNC sheet metal fabricating system.

Strongly suggest you contact Amada to find the most approriate supplier for your country. Not only do they provide IMHO the best equipment, they have a history of fully supporting their clients and channels. You could do a lot worse :)

To make these you will need a draw press of at least 200 ton capacity with a pressure cushion, hydraulic or mechanical and the drawing tools, one for each box.

You will need a trim tool if the draw tool does not incorporate this and you will need a tool to punch the knockouts.

The knockout punch will have to provide for either a single hole or double hole for the sides and the same for the back. Most probably three different tools.

You will need a guillotine to cut the material from stock sheet of you must buy the material in required size or strip (Stripsteel could supply this in drawing quality).

The finished article must be degreased and pickled before painting which could be done by dipping or spraying.

If you need to know more phone me on 082 804 2724.

Johan.

You can purchase 30,000 wall boxes as you described for a lot less than any piece of equipment will cost you.

In that quanity you should be able to get then for about .30 USD each.

Hi,

Looking at your spec in more detail, I think this is the same standard wall box or GPO we use in Australia. You neglected to enter the depth of the box or the diameter of the conduit knockouts. Can I assume the depth is 40 mm and the knockouts on both sides accomodate both 20mm and 25mm conduit? There also 2 threaded receivers for the switch/socket and escutcheon. If all this is so, I would like to inform you they are the same spec. as Australia. FYI, in our factory here in Thailand we are manufacturers of modular houses for the Australian market and as such purchase these items in large quantites (well in excess of your stated volumes). If you wish, I can access our factory database for information on prices and suppliers when I go there later today and let you know.

You could also manufacture plastic boxes, using an extruder or injection molding machine, startup costs are aobut the same and the cost of the parts would be less than a metal box.
