Automata: The Extraordinary "Robots" Designed Hundreds Of Years Ago

07/28/2023 3:09 PM

I found this really interesting and thought I would share it...how things have changed, but the path remains the same....the parallel's are fascinating, the swan vs. Sophia...I wonder what the future will look like in another 100 years...

Mechanical Marvels, so many complex amazing mechanical movements are compiled in one-hour video. A boon to future generations to know the whereabouts of such treasures; perhaps might be forgotten otherwise.

While viewing these wonderful tiny spectacular movements, I remember that those very many mechanical movements used in these tiny toys/robots are recorded by Henry T. Brown in his book, ‘Five Hundred and Seven Mechanical Movements’ which was first published in 1868. C. Alexander Simpkins astonishingly, in his review says that this book offered the pre-Internet world, a collection of the greatest moving devices of the time, gathered in one small readable volume. Reissued in 1995, this book is still being used and enjoyed. Each mechanism is clearly drawn, illustrating how the parts fit together. Then, the picture’s description explains how the mechanism works.

An eager youngster (also elders) may relish the content of this book as well after viewing the wonderful video Automata.

Yes, mechanics repair engines with amazing processes, they repair them in Very Strange Ways.

Prevailing context, like economic condition, available technology, need to endure, etc. determine the working plan.

Even greater technologies fail. Challenger failed, LUNA 25 failed, Voyager 2 was about to fail, success or failure is all in the game, a game of survival and confidence.
