Cell phone wireless charging and air gaps

08/03/2023 7:25 AM

I have a Galaxy S20FE phone and the wireless charger that came with it from the ATT store. The case I bought with the phone does not prevent the wireless charger from working. I wanted better protection so I bought a stronger case. The new case has one of the flip-out rings on the back to allow it to stand at an angle on a desk or table. This ring causes an air gap and introduces metal between the phone and the wireless charging unit. The wireless charger does not now work.

Is there any way to overcome this? I'm sure the gap is a problem. I assume that the ring is a problem too, but it might be small enough to be inside the loop of the wireless charger.

I have a bag of 25 mHz torroid cores that I have been using for engineering recreation. I created a tight pattern of these on the charger pad with a hole in the middle of the pattern for the flip-ring to fit through. My thought was that the ferrite cores would allow the magnetic fields to bridge the gap. I don't know if it was a good idea or not, but it didn't work.

I shelled out the bigger bucks to get an OtterBox for my phone. It is stronger and does not have a flip-out ring. The problem is that the OtterBox is not like their old designs. Every part of this new case is so hard that I can't figure out how to get my phone into it. Major disappointment in their newer products and it has to go back. So far I am only finding on Amazon cases that look flimsey like the one that came with the phone.

Any experience on trying to make a wireless charger work with a flip-our ring case? It seems odd that I'm not finding useful info while doing internet searches. There must be half a billion or more people on the planet using cases like the one I described. I hate to keep using the cord since it is adding wear to the USB jack and that USB jack is probably now the item that will limit the life of the phone.

GA: that second one looks great, even has extra screen protection.

I wonder if the extra screen protection reduces the accuracy/sensitivity of the touch screen?

Great finds!

I keep my apps (spyware) as low as possible. I get about 2.5 days to a charge, so the first one isn't a good fit for me.

The second one looks good and I'm going to order one. It looks like it protects well during a minor drop and it advertises that the wireless chargers will work. I don't understand how I missed it in my searching. That seems to be exactly what I was looking for. The superior searching skills of SE come through again! Thank you.

Wow.

You feel the need to bust someone’s hump for not defining an ubiquitous initialism.

Sad, this is.

And don’t give me any of that ESL baloney. What about ‘app’ or ‘mHz’?

OT vote on this as well.

SolarEagle's suggestion worked great. I still wonder if filling the gap with a material with the proper magnetic properties would "bridge the gap" and allow wireless charging to work with more cases.

Well ... this is getting confusing.

The case I got with my phone allowed wireless charging but did not give me much confidence in how well it would protect the phone.

I got the case from this Amazon link and it seemed like a good case but it did not allow wireless charging. My USB jack is not as tight as it used to be. I need to slow down the wear on the jack.

I then got the case from this Amazon link. This is the case that SolarEagle found. It seems like a good case design and would be even better if they had more than this one color in stock. I was happy for a day or two. When I charged via cord I used to be at 70% to 85% charge at the end of the day. Now, with similar usage, I am down in the 30% to 40% range. Something about the metal in the ring on the back of the case seems to cause the phone to declare 100% charged but not have as much charge as when plugged in. Or, maybe the antenna is blocked and the RF stages are working overtime. All I know is, I would run out of power if I watched a video.

Next, I dished out some money on this Amazon link and bought an Otter Box. Years ago I had an Otter Box for a different phone and I was very happy with it. This one did not have the two part, hard shell and soft shell design of the earlier case. This is very hard and it is so tight I can not get my phone in it. It is going back to Amazon.

After all this, I have made a modification to my second case from this Amazon link. I got a good grip on the "kickstand" ring and pulled it off the back of the phone. There is now a small round hole in the back of the case and a bump area where the kickstand used to park. If I was someone "cool", then the hole and bump would bother me. Since I am an old engineer, I don't care. The important part is that the phone will now charge on the wireless charger. It will be a few days before I know if the phone will hold a charge like it used to, but I'm hopeful that I have a good solution here.

I use one of these v/a monitors to see realtime watt draw...

With my wireless charger I get around 4.9 volts and 1.3 amps for iphone, this way you can see if the phone is positioned properly and everything is working at a glance...The further the phone is from the surface the slower it charges...

I have never owned a cell phone. The only wireless charging I have is a 23 yr. old toothbrush. And it continues to amaze me.

Why would someone put a metal ring or a magnet, in a magnetic charging field? Kinda sorta interferes with the whole process doesn't it?

Can the ring and magnet be removed and see if there is a difference?

With the metal ring "kickstand" removed I am getting battery performance similar to what I had with the corded charges. This is far from conclusive, but what I observed suggests that the reported charge of 100% with the unmodified case was considerably less than the reported charge of 100% with the ring removed.

Is there any way you can pop the magnet out? Perhaps with jeweler's screwdriver. Or a small pick. Just curious. Don't break it to find out.

Have you ever tried that superzilla? It's great stuff.

Sometime watch the output of the secondary of a transformer, while putting an external magnet close to the transformer. Or read up on magnetic amps.

Wireless charging is not rf charging, it's near field transformer action charging. Clear and shorten that field.

Just an opinion I know nothing about smartphones. Or placing magnets in transformer fields, apparently. There might be a secret handshake now. A quantum transformer.

Just from what I've seen, I wouldn't use a M field in an existing M field for closeness. A plastic slide or cradle would do.

But if Apple is right, and their magnets are useful.......you should see it with this test. Be ready to re-assemble.
