Richard Dawkins provided a similar explanation in The God Delusion (2006), based on the insect keeping one compound-eye segment pointed toward the light source. The sun and moon are practically at infinity, resulting in straight-line flight. Artificial lights, though, are nearby, resulting in circular or spiral flight.

Oddly enough different species are attracted by different wavelengths of light...

Oddly enough different species are attracted by different wavelengths of light...

I'm guessing it has to do with their eyesight, which has to do with the kinds of flowers they pollinate. Co-evolution and all that...
