Coating to Improve Tensile Strength in Concrete Surface

04/02/2024 3:56 PM

Good day.

There is recent built (2 years) concrete floor that shows many cracks.. needs to be repaired.

It is not feasible to use concrete o any mortar because the curing time and the step elevation could be created.

Do you know if there is any king of "liquid coating" like epoxy or elastomeric that could improve the surface tensile strength?

I appreciate in advance

Absolutely! Just search for concrete epoxy. The first ad suggests Lowe's, but you should find it an any large home supply store.

I don't have any answers, but I do know it might be helpful if you provide more details. Is this indoor or outdoor? Is the site residential, industrial, landscaping, etc? I don't understand the "step elevation" statement, could you explain it? Does the site receive foot traffic wear, forklift wear, etc? Does the surface need to be "non slip"?

Here is the current situation..... we believe that because the concrete have bad quality (we are waiting for laboratory results)... meaning low Tensile Resistance....there are a LOT of cracks

It is Industrial Indoor Facilities in current operations, with forklifts working and "non slip" surface.

The "step" could be create if mortar or concrete overlay is build.... making the forklift "jump"

We believe that if we could overlay something thin with some Tensile Resistance contribute, it wil help to reach the Tensile Resistance necessary.

Excuse my terrible English limitations

They repaired similar cracks using a few millimeters of epoxy covering large areas of the floor in a facility where I occasionally work, and it seems to have been successful, but the building is at least 70 years old.

Seeing cracks like you show in 2-year-old concrete tells me that that concrete was of poor quality, improperly finished, not thick enough for forklift load, or a combination of those and/or other factors.

I'm glad to hear you are having it tested. I believe the original contractor who laid that concrete should be liable for the cost of repair/replacement, but I'm NOT a lawyer!

Looks like several mistakes here.No rebar re enforcement,..or improperly placed rebar, even with fiberglass re enforced concrete, rebar is needed for heavy loads,..weak concrete mix,or ..insufficient curing time or not kept wet while curing, ..improperly prepared foundation(Soft spots under concrete),..concrete not thick enough for load.

Did the contractor do slump tests on the concrete pour? Most reputable contractors will keep the core samples and slump tests on file for a long time in case of such failures.

Consult an engineering firm for testing and evaluation, and a lawyer if planning to seek repairs and/or compensation.

Forklift jumping is highly discouraged

OK Clark.Let go of the forklift.Lois isn't watching since you are too fat and old to get into your suit.

That's obviously a fabricated image. The forks are intact and unbent, and there's no way that plywood ramp could withstand the impact of a forklift going fast enough to be lifted that high.

...and if the ramp and the forks were somehow strong enough. there's no way the forklift could reach that position and orientation.

There are many versions of materials out there to cover this as folks have mentioned. This concrete looks like it was overworked which brings the cream (no aggregate or strength) to the top. Looks nice but not strong in itself.

Its been years since I was involved with repairing concrete with self leveling epoxy and it was not cheap but works really well if prepped properly. Depending upon the damage, there might need to be some thickness to the repair which might not be even with the surrounding concrete pads but your chosen contractor should be able to figure that out.

You could also bolt a fairly thin steel plate over it or something similar if you dont care about looks. Most soft tire forklifts should be able to handle easily.

repairing concrete with self leveling epoxy and it was not cheap but works really well if prepped properly,,,, the cost would NOT be a problem because must stop this apparent progessity of the failure.

We are a little concern that if we apply some epoxy overlay... then we will not be able to see if the cracks appear again

Concrete almost always cracks and that is fine as the rebar and bedding are what really gives concrete is strength and resistance to bending. Its just where it cracks that is important.

Is it just one area that has this problem? Looking at the whole thing it seems like a radiating cracking from a center stress right in the middle of that kind of circle. I wonder if the bedding was not tamped properly or some water leak might have reduced the level of the ground under that area. Really hard to diagnose such things but I hope you get it figured out.

The epoxy they used in the old building I referred to is transparent, with a slightly yellowish color. You can easily see the concrete and cracks through the coating.

Nothing will permanently repair if the foundation below the concrete was not properly prepared. The repairs will eventually echo through the top layer of whatever you put on top.I did not see any expansion joints in the concrete which makes me wonder if the contractor was a low-bid fly by night operator.A poor quality job can also result if there is a rush to complete the original job by the owner or project manager and not enough time to finish it properly. As you stated, down time is very limited due to production requirements.Inadequate mixing time in the delivery truck,at least 80 revolutions are required for a good mix..could be one load or more poured before an adequate mixing.
