Arc Flash Study — Arc Rated Switchgear

06/25/2024 1:35 PM

If we have arc-rated switchgear, can we conduct live maintenance without performing arc flash studies?

If we have arc-rated switchgear, is there still a need to conduct arc flash studies?

Hopefully you've already had at least one done....

..."Arc flash studies are risk assessments that help ensure workplace safety by identifying potential hazards and providing workers with the information they need to protect themselves. They are required by several codes, including OSHA, NFPA 70E, NFPA 70, and IEEE. "...

..."An arc flash study should be completed every five years, or when major changes are made to the electrical system. This assessment is done to provide staff with the appropriate training and personal protective equipment (PPE) they may need while in your workplace."...

The answers depend upon the capabilities of the <...we...>, which label is undefined at present.

Here is your answer.

You decide.

A word to the wise is sufficient.

Many words are used in an epitaph.

If the <...we...> has to ask an anonymous global international Engineering forum, then the business to which the <...we...> is attached doesn't have the procedures in place to carry out this activity safely. Therefore the people in the <...we...> are at great risk.

  • One solution is to ensure that procedures are in place and that the <...we...> is properly trained.
  • Another solution is to hire-in people other than the <...we...> to safely carry out the activity.

Either way, the safest thing to do is to stop until one of these solutions has been completed. No-one wants to disappear in a puff of smoke leaving families and friends in bereavement through a lack of training and experience. Such a thing would have criminal consequences at an executive level within the <...we...>.
