Water Collection from Condensation

10/05/2024 5:52 AM

External is cold and internal is warm and humid.

For glass panels of a skylight system with a few degree of gradient, if condensation happened, what is the path of water droplets? Travelling along the slope or directly fall down.

I want to design a water discharge system for condensation of a skylight system.

Thanks!

They'll do one of three things: drip off, run down, or just stay put. A steeper gradient will favor running down. The drops will start small and increase in size. The attraction between the water and glass is proportional to the square of droplet size. The weight of the droplets is proportional to cube of droplet size. So the droplets should stay put at first, then either run off or drip, depending on the angle.

You might try experimenting, say with a piece of glass held over a pan of boiling water on the stove.

Anyplace you have condensation accumulate, you're going to have mold, mildew, and algae along with it...this is one of those an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure situations...there are various strategies employed in prevention, as this is not a new problem....ventilation is probably the most important and easiest, you want to lower the level of humidity in the space...but proper installation is first to consider...

Where the condensate goes depends on the rate of formation. A double pane with air gap keeps the outside pane at a different temp from the inside pane. Need a dry gap. Eliminate the temp diff and eliminate the condensate.

Hope you find a solution. It might be a piece of glass/plastic/metal placed near the bottom and transverse to the slope and in contact with the skylight, but pretty vertical itself. That might intercept the running droplets and cause them to drip off in a place that you have control over. Slope that transverse piece and hopefully the drops will run to one end and thus be more collectible.

My experience has been with sheet metal pole building roofs; in certain weather conditions it has rained inside, most always under the purlins. Not often, but annoying!

If you prevent the condensate from forming you don't have to worry about the drips.

Use a commercially available de-fogger that is Silicon based or Ethoxylate based.

Plenty of different brands available.

Before using the defogger, make certain the glass is clean.A dust particle will become the nexus of a drop.

Treating the source is always better than treating the symptoms.

Do you mean "silicone" based?

Silicon is a natural occurring element, while silicone is a man made polymer.

My source indicated Silicon,or I misread it.

How long can the effect last for?

Some integrated solutions can last up to a year....but I would imagine a few months for field applied coatings...
