Are Manholes Mandatory for MV Cables Crossing a Street?

12/17/2024 1:16 PM

Hello

When medium-voltage (MV) cables need to cross a street, they are installed underground inside conduits. I’m trying to determine whether it is an obligation or just a best practice to install manholes on both sides of the street where the cables enter and exit the crossing.

  • Are there specific standards (e.g., IEC, NEC, or others) that require manholes in this situation?
  • If it’s not mandatory, under what circumstances would installing manholes on both sides be recommended?
  • Would it depend on factors such as the cable length, number of bends, or future accessibility for maintenance?

Your advice or references to relevant standards would be greatly appreciated

Best regards

Many locations insist that only licensed or bonded personnel are qualified to install medium voltage (2.4kV AC ~ 69kV AC) power grid cabling. They know the local codes that apply.

Manholes are chiefly installed to facilitate the pulling of the wire through the conduits, and I think are required over any cable splice connection...So if you had a splice on either side of the street, then a separate manhole for each would be required...

How is it possible to install <...medium-voltage (MV) cables...> without them?

They could be installed from a riser pole on each side, through conduits running down the poles and under the street. I see it done by our local utility in my area. Sometimes you don't want to cross a highway aerially, but rather bury them. That's just one instance.
