I used to check mechanical fit inside stainless steel enclosures using Play-Doh. It wasn't a calibrated measurement, but it worked well, was easy, and I didn't have to worry about someone breaking the instrumentation.

I bought the Play-Doh for work, kept it in my desk drawer, but never turned it in on an expense report. It just didn't seem like something I wanted to explain to the bean counters.
