Roto Earth Fault Detection for Diesel Generators

02/11/2025 4:30 PM

What are the methods for detecting earth faults in rotor windings without using slip rings? This is for diesel generators with a capacity of 3 to 5 MVA.
Is it possible to use instruments like Brush Prismic R10 Rotor earth fault monitor for these generators (3 to 5MVA)
Is rotor earth fault detection necessary for generators in this capacity range?

Perplexity.ai yielded two methods, the first method naming Brush Prismic equipment without being fed any proprietary cue. Perplexity.ai answered based on only two quoted sources.

Deepseek.com yielded ten methods. Their earth fault monitor method discreetly kept brand naming at bay.

Deepseek's "considerations" of what's necessary are helpful:

  • Brushless Excitation Systems: For generators with brushless excitation systems, special care must be taken to ensure that the monitoring methods do not interfere with the excitation system.
  • Sensitivity and Accuracy: Choose a method that provides sufficient sensitivity and accuracy to detect faults at an early stage.
  • Integration with Control Systems: Ensure that the fault detection system is integrated with the generator control system for automatic alarms or shutdowns in case of a fault.

This article deals only with stator earth fault protection,,,

From Microsoft Copilot (1 out of 30 responses):

"It looks like you’re referring to the Brush Prismic R10 Rotor Earth Fault Monitor. This device is used to detect and monitor earth faults in the rotor windings of electrical machines, such as generators and motors. It’s an important tool for ensuring the reliability and safety of these machines by identifying faults early and preventing potential damage.

Is there something specific you’d like to know about this device?"
