Instantaneous Separation of the Elbow Joint

03/12/2025 9:54 PM

Could you please provide any data or resources regarding the instantaneous separation of the elbow joint during pitching or external impact?

*separation between bones

In baseball pitching, a "separation" of the elbow joint, often referred to as Little League elbow or pitcher's elbow, typically involves damage to the medial epicondyle (a growth plate on the inside of the elbow) due to overuse and repetitive throwing motions, causing pain and inflammation. Here's a more detailed explanation:

  • What it is: Little League elbow, or medial epicondyle apophysitis, is an irritation and inflammation of the growth plate on the inside of the elbow, which is common in young pitchers.
  • Cause: The repetitive throwing motion in baseball places a valgus stress (a force that pushes the elbow outwards) on the inside of the elbow joint, which can damage the structures, including the medial epicondyle.
  • Symptoms: Pain and swelling on the inside of the elbow, especially during or after throwing, are common symptoms.
  • Risk Factors: Young pitchers, especially those who throw a lot, are at higher risk.
  • Treatment: Treatment typically involves rest, ice, and potentially physical therapy to address the inflammation and pain. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to address the damage.
  • Avulsion fracture: In severe cases, the muscle tendon attached to the medial epicondyle can pull it off the bone, resulting in an avulsion fracture.
  • Prevention: Proper pitching mechanics, adequate rest, and avoiding overuse can help prevent Little League elbow.

Wow, that sounds painful.

"Pitching or external impact" is very broad and includes sports, falls, accidents and violence. Could you be a little more specific in your request? Are you only interested in joint separation without bone breakage? Any additional criteria on including or excluding major soft tissue damage? Are these sports injuries only?

For one thing, go to the doctor to see if there are any other issues, like torn ligaments. - Ice it, as cold as you can endure to keep the swelling down, the longer the swelling stays the more damage occurs.

- do the rehab.

How do I know this, having dislocated my ankle playing sports in my youth, (left ankle at 22 sliding into second base playing baseball and my right ankle at 38 playing basketball with 20 something year olds.)

At 64, I’m paying a price for it now.

Yeah, this stuff usually increases by the square of the years.

Well, first I quit LaCrose, then Soccer, then Basketball, racketball… that’s was hard, Ill still go on the court, but a lot less intense.

I do still go to the gym,… occasionally…

i find that if I stay active, it does slow down or limit the pain somewhat.

I know my knees aren't 25 anymore. But thankfully, they don't give me too many problems. I'm trying to keep it that way too by keeping them moving, and not neglecting strength exercises.

That's generally the best we can do. If you rest, you rust. If you stop, you die. Step away from the recliner !!

We were hired todo some logging. Where my dad had an accident in the woods. A huge American Elm spun on a Stump fell on him. He was about 50, when that happened.

he was busted up pretty good. After he healed, He was still in quite a bit of pain and when he rested the pain started to hit him pretty hard, he'd say something to that affect and he’d get up and said, he need to get to work because moving helped. And it’s true, it does, people that give up and stays on the couch is the beginning of the end.

but by fighting it and not giving up, he did live to 93. Still did farm work at 85, after that, the workload on what he could do dropped off to least strenuous work like feeding young stock on the farm.

One good exercise for knees is to always go up the stairs backwards. Mine were so bad a few years back that I installed hand rails on both sides of the stairs. If you go up backwards you can use the rails to help to begin with; then, as the knees improve you can gradually ween yourself off the rails.

One good thing about this is that as long as you remember each time you go upstairs, you don't need to set aside any time to do the exercise.

I’ll have to try that.

one thing I noticed, is as people age, they begin to look down as your walk or going down stairs.

i had read, that when you begin to do that, this can affect your balance and posture, potentially increasing the risk of falls.

when I dislocated my ankle the second time, I was at the chiropractor, and he gave me a wobble board, to retrain my ankles. He said that this will help me when I’m playing sports, jumping. My brain will know what position my ankle is in. So that when I land it’s not tilted to the side. Similar to muscle memory.
