Anti-static Space Suits

12/23/2025 9:53 AM

Concerns over lunar regolith clinging to suits, craft and everything else, Seems to me to a simple problem to solve.

Use an alternating static field on the surface of the suites or craft to neutralize static charges.

This method is in use in industries world wide and is very effective.

I am sure there are many reasons why this will not work in this situation, but I do not know why.

Does anyone know?

Liquid Nitrogen technique: https://newatlas.com/space/liquid-nitrogen-regolith-spacesuits

This is a high dollar ‘lint roller’ commissioned by NASA, still in R&D: https://aero.umd.edu/news/story/a-ldquolint-rollerrdquo-for-moon-dust

It appears to me that the spirit of your question lives in the Electrodynamic Dust Shield in the first link.

I built a anti-static generator for a plant one time that had lots of plastic trays that would raise the hair on your arms from3 feet away, and create errors in their controllers. I used a 5kv a/c source, and a grid made of fine tungsten wire and plexiglass. I Installed in a fan that moved 12000 cubic feet per minute and in a few minutes, the static was gone, and the air smelled very clean like after a thunderstorm.

The air was charged positive for 1/120th of a second, and negative for 1/120th of a second and the dust particles attracted to each other till they were heavy enough to fall out. The walls were concrete and neutral so they attracted either charge, hence the build up on the walls.

The only drawback was the dust accumulated on the walls, however there was no dust in the air and the people were happy not to get a shock when they touched a tray. And the controllers had no static related failures or errors.

CAUTION: Do not use more than 5KV,because excessive ozone will be produced which is not healthy.

One minor detail to consider is that the moon has no air...

The electrical field extends beyond the conductors. But nearby objects can be charged without air.

Consider a center tapped transformer, with high voltage output. The dust particles would be attracted to the center tapped plate, from both polarities of dust. This could be used as a dust collector.

The moon surface is considered to be negative, so the positive particles could be attracted to the surface. A dust free zone could be constructed. The suits might have to have a grounding cable attached, I haven't thought about it in depth yet, just during brain-idle time.

Would it work? Or not?

Suggestions are always welcome.
