Arc Flash and IP Rating

05/11/2026 11:41 AM

What is the minimum IP rating required for an enclosure to direct the exhaust of extremely hot gases from an internal arcing event away from personnel?

(or)

In the case of a non arc rated enclosure, which IP rating provides optimal protection against arc flash for personnel in the vicinity?

Unfortunately, attempting to infer EX ratings from IP ratings is not possible. Any attempt to do so without extensive modeling or testing of the specific design of an enclosure could result in unexpected consequences.

The design criteria for an IP65 enclosure can be accomplished with a molded fiberglass or plastic design. Many EX enclosures are constructed of cast iron with machined bolted joints. While it might be possible for an IP65 enclosure to fully contain an internal explosion, it’s quite possible that it would not.
