How Do We Move EMC from a Final Compliance Test to a Sequence of Engineering Design Gates?

Too often, EMC is treated as something to verify after the layout, enclosure, cabling, and firmware are already fixed. By that stage, the available corrective actions are usually limited, expensive, and disruptive.

A better approach is to review EMC risk progressively during development. That means looking early at switching-current loops, reference-plane continuity, cable and connector boundaries, enclosure seams and apertures, grounding strategy, and even firmware operating states before layout and tooling are frozen.

Pre-compliance measurements can then be used not simply to ask “does it pass?” but to understand why an emission exists: is the dominant issue the noise source itself, the coupling path, or the physical structure that is acting as the antenna?

I’d be interested to hear how others structure these EMC design gates in practice. At what stages do you review EMC risk, and which measurements or design reviews have been most effective in preventing late-stage compliance failures?

Absolutely. This is classic Kimmel-Gerke material. EMC mitigation occurs at each stage of the design process, employing methods commensurate with the design stage.

1. Best practices early on. Requirements include best practices for cabling, penetrations, system layout, etc.

2. Hand calcs and high level subjective assessment get added as concept designs get firmed up.

3. Sniffers and clamp-on current probes come out for bread-boards and brass-boards.

4. Prototypes and demonstration units go to MetLabs or other accredited lab for a 'quick sweep' of likely concerns.

5. Qual units/systems get the full-up lab evaluation per the required limits.

The concept of EMC and product compatibility as I experienced were already pre considered during the R&D phase of any given product..

All considerations are taken and incorporated during the initial selection of various components and materials to be used in completing a prototype sample of the product..

Analysis on the the prototype evaluation are all incorporated in the layout and placement of the different components in the circuits.. After which were also considered and incorporated in the design of the PC boards to be used in the finished product..
