Are you using a septic tank? If you are, you'll need to dose in lime or some other alkali periodically to maintain the pH level between 6.8 and 7.2, otherwise the methane bacteria will die off and the foul odors will be produced. If your septic tank pH has been below 6.5 for some time, your methanogens are already dead, so you'll need to purge your septic tank and have it re-innoculated with beneficial anerobic bacteria.

If you're connected to a sewer system, the usual cause for this problem will be either a partially block sewer pipe or insufficient water in your toilet bowl water-trap.

A well-designed water closet should have a water-filled U-bend that keeps the gases within the drainage system and prevents them from entering the building.

Joints in push-fit waste piping that is within the bulding can be sealed by disassembling them, wiping a smear of vaseline around them and reassembling them.

Try those.

you need to identify the source, better suggestions may then be made to solve the problem

Sound like you have gases leaking from the sanitary line.

Does the bowl hold water to pool level above the open at the bottom. If not the toilet is bad replace it. There is a crack in the trap.

If the toilet is loose then the seal is bad. The seal is a wax type ring available at just about all hardware stores. Get new bolts most likely nuts will be rust on and old one will break off. they just hook into flange. replace the seal

If seal is bad but present a flexible caulk may hold for a while. If it is bad it will allow odor. Just went through this last month myself. And as stated the trap should be filled with water.

I agree! Sounds like the wax seal is broken. Remove the 2 (or 4) nuts holding the commode to the floor (flush first & shut off water supply). Carefully lift commode, then replace the wax ring. Carefully set the commode on the new wax ring being careful not to move it once it is in place. Rebolt, being careful not to over tighten nuts.

Afterthought: Are the nuts already loose (does commode rock when one sits on it?). If so, then wax seal has been broken. Repair immediately! Sewer gas is not friendly!

I see that you're in Florida -- are you sure it isn't the smell of the water itself? I've spent enough time south of your neck of the woods, and have always remembere the odor of the water. Me grandparents said "you'll get used to it!" Can one get used to water that smells like rotting cabbage or rotten eggs?

I also remember some Gulf Coast municipalities have non-potable water piped, along with potable water to just about everywhere. Main uses are for irrigation, firefighting, etc. The stuff doesn't always smell so good, either. Could an apprentice plumber have goofed?

Just my 2 cents.

Agree - and add to that the current water supply situation in the area ... Though the shower smelled far worse than the toilet.

Most of the replies point to a problem right in/with your commode. Yes definitely DO remove and inspect and disinfect it thoroughly. Also, when you remove the commode to inspect it, plug the trap with rags then examine the flooring around the commode flange, a small leak may have left nasty stuff soak into the wooden floor. If so, clean it with strong bleach, let it dry, then paint the raw wood with KILZ sealing paint before re-installing the crapper.

Another possibility, the foul odor SHOULD be in the piping below the commode's trap and the "water seal" in the commode is supposed to do just that, however, your relief vent pipe may not be working correctly. When the commode flushes, the water and "stuff" pushes air ahead of it, this air MUST escape up a vent pipe riser, otherwise back pressure builds and the foul odor will "burp" its way through the water seal or possibly the water seal of the sink.

It only takes a tiny little burp to make a BIG stink.

PS, if you're NOT on city sewer system, don't be flushing any nasty chemicals down your commode to "kill" the smell, you'll "kill" the bacterias in the septic tank itself, then you'll have troubles for sure.

What are you filtering? The air in your toilet? If so, activated carbon does a great job of removing foul smells.

There is an invention out there that already exists, I read about it, strangely enough, this morning while I was on the throne laying cable. It is toilet seat with a built in fan. It has a motion sensor that detects when someone is preparing to "burn a mule". The fan draws the offending odors through a replacable carbon filter. The other age old tried and true method is to "light a match", it works fairly well, unless you take Bigfoot size dumps.

http://www.ramseyelectronics.com/

Ramsey makes an ion cannon kit that will work for you. After my wife had cancer treatments this little item became a necessity for a while. I added a 555 timer and relay to turn it off after 13 minutes. It is well worth the money. It removes all odors in a 50 square foot bathroom in a very short time period.

If you go for the air ionizer, be warned that some of them generate more than a small amount of ozone. This can really irritate especially if you have respiratory problems.

all sewer plumbing is vented to the outside by code. Look at the roofs around you. Those small diameter pipes are carrying the gas.

More than likely your "stink" pipe is plugged. Probably birds or bees. have a plumber check that it is clear and whoosh, your stink problems are gone.

all you engineers have to over think everything. sheesh.

Oops, my mistake.

Photocatalytic filtration systems.

quartz felt impregnated with Titanium dioxide. UVC light source. will breakdown organic compounds several times more effectively than chlorine. if you use UVC there is no ozone generation. system results in h20 co2 and o2 as by product.

Surf the net, and you will find it. OR, go to...www.quartz.saint-gobain.com (shameless plug for my company)

Re: Foul Odor

The practice in Australia is to install a floor drain in the WC. This floor drain leads to a U-bend type water seal which , in turn, is then connected into the adjacent sewer main.

Often the water, which forms the sealing medium in the floor drain, evaporates away, eventually leading to the situation where foul smelling air can rise from the sewer main through the, now unsealed, floor drain and into the confines of the WC.

The simple cure is to regularly pour a quantity of water down the floor drain to replenish the water seal, just as the seal in the toilet itself is replenished each time the toilet is flushed.

Should you have this configuration, then this may be your solution.
