Standard Centrifuge Tube Size

12/13/2007 8:25 AM

I am working on a product that would require the use of 15 ml centrifuge tubes. A standard of the shelf tube is 120 mm in length , the product I am developing would require an additional 6 mm in length. Can anyone tell me if a 126 mm long 15 ml centrifuge tube would be a problem with such issues as clearance or swing bucket sizes in common bench top centrifuges used in labs that work on protein separations and sample preparations.

Thanks in advance.

The answer really depend on the brand of centrifuge in use. Can you give us that info.

In the lab across the hall from my office they use several different brands of centrifuge. The tubes are not completely interchangeable.

You could certainly have some made for your needs.

I use a Durafuge 200 by Precision. The " longer than standard " tube is no problem in this machine. The device I am involved in developing would be marketed to clinical labs and I need to feel confident that it would be universally compatible with at least the majority of benchtop centrifuges . I am hoping there is some industry standard for these machines that would insure the clearance of an added 6 mm in length. Thanks for your reply Silvcrow.
