Lexus Sedan Goes Hybrid

03/16/2006 11:16 AM

The Lexus brand of Toyota Motor Corp. will roll-out its first hybrid sedan next month, using Toyota's patented gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. The hybrid system in the new Lexus GS450h is the first designed for cars with rear-wheel-drive. According to Toyota:

The GS450h sports a "3.5-liter V6 gasoline engine with an electric motor to provide power comparable to a 4.5-liter vehicle, but with the fuel economy of a 2-liter engine, or around 14.2 km/litre (33 miles per gallon)."

The GS450h is the second Lexus foray into hybrid technology after the RX400h sport utility vehicle.

No, I do not work for Toyota or Lexus. I'm just following the hybrid trend.

Lexus Hybrid

03/17/2006 11:55 AM

Having driven a Toyota Hybrid I would have to admit that the technology works well but the added cost and complexity will take a very long time to show some sort of a payback. From the studies I have read something like 75,000 miles (If you do highway driving the payback stretches to an even greater period) just to break even. At that point NiMH will begin to show their age and may need replacement (Although Toyota offers a 100K warranty but this may not cover "Normal Wear" which might include reduced battery capacity) This certainly is cool technology but where is the ($)savings?
