Definition of A Compressed Air Manifold Or Pressure Vessel?

12/14/2007 9:31 AM

In the US, what constitutes a pressure vessel versus a manifold and at what point does it need to ASME certified. I'd like a simple definition without having to purchase the ASME code.

Specifically, pulse jet style dust collectors use a compressed air manifold, typically 5 to 6" diameter or a comprable size square unit, that has multiple diaphragm valves feeding from it. I've been informed that these manifolds cannot exceed a certain size without having to be ASME certified. Is this accurate and size an is there a distinction for a vessel versus a manifold?

My understanding of the code requires any fabricated container holding greater than 15 psig to be ASME certified, regardless of volume. If you assemble a manifold from pipe components you're okay, but if you weld ends on a piece of structural steel tube and install some pipe bungs for valves or whatnot and operate above 15 psi, you're governed by the code.

If someone has a differing interpretation, please post.

The definition of a vessel is: A Vessel Performs a proces, like heat exchange, Separation of phases, mass transfer, or reactor.

Your situation would not require the piping to be built as a vessel, instead you'd build per ASME B31.3.

In the UK the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 is the applicable Statutory Instrument.
