Septic Tank Leak Detection System

12/18/2007 1:59 AM

A friend of mine was instructed (verbally) to install a leak detection system to an existing (concrete floor and plastered masonry walls) septic tank and report any leaks to the authority.

This do not seem to be the per-installation visual or pressure test. but no confirmation could be obtained.

Do any of you know about an electronic (or whatever) system that can be installed around and underneath (or any where else) capable of reporting live in-site leaks?

For interest sake he will be allowed to use the (66% clean) effluent for the irrigation of crops or according to the pamphlet dispose of the effluent through a soak-away (French drain) system.

Do it make any sense?

Not much. What happens when the level drops because of the actions of the soak-away; does that count as a leak?

Guest,

It seems strange that a public authority would be concerned with leaks from a septic tank... Considering that virtually the entire (liquid) contents of the tank is SUPPOSED to leak out of the tank - or more properly "leach" out through the outfall piping & leaching field. Anything that would leak through a hole in the the bottom of the tank would be "sludge" that settled out of the liquid suspension anyway.

One means would be to establish "sink wells" around the perimeter of the septic tank, solid pvc piping to depth, end caps in place to prevent seepage and or holes at depth to measure various levels around the septic tank. Then you can measure the fluids that accumulate in the pipe to test the contaminate levels leaking through. Placing a gravel field around the septic tank with the French drains installed to channel the effluents would require extensive digging around the septic tank. Depending on the level of tank damage and accidental leakage to the surrounding soil, the best long term results might come from digging a whole new septic tank system, adjacent to the old system, that includes a leech field running to the area of the crops thus solving the problem.
