Rectifier & 3 phase Question

12/21/2007 12:30 AM

Question 1 : I have several large rectifiers that were used for Drive In Theatre movie projection that have been retired by my company . They are 230 V AC / 3 phase and convert the power to solid DC; This is used so that the movie light will not flicker ,on the screen from the AC . I have been told that the rectifiers could also be used as inverters to convert DC to AC and as great battery chargers . How do I do That ?

Question 2: Can a 3 phase, roto phase converter be used to generate electricty as it provides a third leg when the 2 - 110 volt lines are used to drive it ?

Can this be done without much expense and please tell me how.

Thanks

Joe

Hello Georgia Adobe, (Joe)

Please advise the type of Rectifier units you have.

  1. Silicon
  2. Germanium
  3. Selenium
  4. Mercury arc
  5. Rotary AC/DC converter

You refer to a "roto phase" converter, please advise if you mean Rotary Converter.

If you advise make, model and serial Number/s of the Unit/s, it may assist in advising you.....

1] no, you cannt use it as an inverter, because inverter has another parts add to your rectifier, which change dc to high frequecy voltage (either in pwm or spwm shape) then filter to 50/60 or other frequency mains.

A] if its only a rectifier, it s not stable power as well. if you hwpe to get a stable powe, you hve to ad adjustor.

b] whether movie light flicher display on screen denpends on projector shutter speed. normally its rotating 48/s. while film speed is 24 frames/s. in order that our eyes cannt feel flicker.

c] bettery charger is not from AC but from DC or pulse DC. you can use the rectifier as a charger fro your betery. but keep voltage with your bettery specification.

I cannt uderstand your 2 question.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your replies. I think I found, on the net a link to the rectifier we have at a filmtech.com forum manuals section Christie FXM series power supply type FXM-1600. That link is :

http://www.film-tech.com/warehouse/wareview.php?id=360&category=2

As to if its a

  1. Silicon
  2. Germanium
  3. Selenium
  4. Mercury arc
  5. Rotary AC/DC converter Well Sparky your over my head there.

As to the Roto Phase , Yes its a rotary motor phase converter. We input 220 V AC & it converts the output to 3 Phase for the projector lamphouse rectifier noted above.

Oh , CNPower your partially right about the timing of the shutter & 24 FPS as the main flicker adjustment for a projector, but if the power supply to your light source is flickering as in AC power you will see it on the screen and you won't be able to adjust that out, with just shutter timing.

Thanks

Joe

Hi, Georgia,

The rectifier is belong to something like type of magnetic saturation stabilizer. it can stable ac voltage and then get a stable DC which supply you lamp. ITs very old, I dont think the projector will still use such heavy rectifier, most of today, we use switcher power to lamp. its light very mcy and high efficiency.

this lamp is better than use old carbon arc lamp. it cannt cause flicher on screen.

As I said before, its cannt be an inverter. if you use it as a changer, be sure to keep you bettery consistency with it output voltage.

If the output of your rotary converter is configured in Y then from phase to neutral you will have 120 volts, or 208 volts across any of the three phases, if it is delta then you will only have 208 volts available .The output voltage is fixed determined by the design of your machine.

Most useful use of this machine would be for operating 3 phase motors within its capacity.

Your silicon rectifiers could form the basis of a battery charger the design of which depends on what you are going to charge??

Personally they would be more useful to somebody who repairs welding equipment.

Hi Garth,

That's good to know and thank you for the input. They are actually more useful to me as movie projector equipment as I also Own Movie Theatres , but someone suggested that they could be useful as other things too if I only knew how to do so . Therefore, I thought I should ask the questions.

Best Regards

Joe

you could use it as ac stabilizer after remove diode recitifer.

I guess it may be 1- 2kw.
