Gasket Selection

12/27/2007 1:33 AM

I am to install a Pressure transmitter on a crude oil Line.Line material is carbon steel, Instrument is of Stainless steel. Temp max is about 250 Deg Centigrade. Pressure 10 Kg / sq cm (g)

Pls advise correct gasket material considering the two flanges (Piping and Instrument )are dissimilar metals and corrosion and any other issues related to dissimilar metals in contact.

Appreciate a fast feedback.

In steam & thermic oil 350 C + I always use Klingerite 1000C packing sheet and make out my own gasket for all sizes of flanges . The Sheet size is 8' x 4' x 1/8".

Practically all my erected Plants since last 10 years have not reported any leakage till date on Steam/ Condensate/ Thero Oil Flanges.

spiral wound gaskets of monel is best suited as per your flange size

The two selections are very good :

1. Klingerite (3 mm thk.) with the optimum design temp. (ready made or fabricated from sheets).

2. Spiral wound gaskets of monel or stainless (ready made only).

But take care that the gasket rating shall be the same as the rating of flange.

In accordance with ASME B16.5 : For design temp. (not operating) of 250 oC and design pressure (not operating) of 12.1 bar, the flange and gasket rating may be 150#, over that you have to select a higher rating, may be 300#.

hello,

If as per calculation you have stated above using ANSI B16.5,rating of flange is coming Class 150,then what is reason to go for higher rating.

For future reference here is a online gasket design center. http://www.ramgaskets.co.uk/engineers-gasket-design-centre.html From which you can download a charts detailing both how to select gasket materials. http://www.ramgaskets.co.uk/uploads/Gasket_Materials_Selector.pdf And specifying their properties. http://www.ramgaskets.co.uk/uploads/Gasket_Material_Properties.pdf
