Electrified Barriers for fish

01/01/2008 12:16 AM

3 questions need answering in layman's terms.....if possible.

1.What type of current and what strength of current (watts, amps, volts) is used in these fish barriers we hear about in the Great Lakes area to keep out the Asian Carp?

2.How far can that current be felt by the fish under optimum conditions?

3.Why does water turbidity affect the current?

Hi Smitty.

I don't really know the answer to that one, but when I worked as an engineer in a shipyard the welders used to catch fish by dipping the end of their elecrodes into the water.

This paralysed the fish long enough for them to be picked out of the water with a landing net.

Spencer.
