Web Source (free) for Truss Designs?

01/02/2008 3:01 PM

I am going to build a barn-style workshop (for personal use). I want to build my own trusses. I think I am perfectly capable of designing them, but the county engineer will want to see a Certified Engineer's stamp on the plans. Is there a web site with approved truss designs available?

Go visit a truss shop. You may be surprised what you can get with an honest query. You might even discover they can build and deliver it cheaper than you can buy and build it. If not, you will probably get some valuable information.

I agree.

I've been building for about 35 years and I've never been able to beat a truss manufacturers price.

When you throw in the cost of the lumber, gusset plates, nails and labor, you'll be well above their price.

You can visit a truss shop and see what they make on a daily basis and make your project dimensions to fit what they can supply at a discounted price.

I doubt very much that an engineer would place his stamp on any designed sold over the internet. In most jurisdictions, not only is a stamp needed for the design, but the engineer must sign off the project once the construction has been completed to ensure that whatever was built was done so according to the blueprint.

It's not worth cutting the corners.

Ok, let's say you find a source for such trusses that withstand specific loadings that said County Engineer's office will accept for the purpose, structure, and site that you specify, then I would hope that the (equivalent of the) Building Inspection Department will also want the appropriate stamp(s) for the finished structure. Other questions that need to be answered are:

Is a Building permit required ? With a Structural Engineers Stamp as well as a Civil Engineers Stamp?

Is a Plumbing Permit required?

Is a Electrical Permit required?

Is a Fire Department approval required?

Do you plan on using any hazardous materials to build it?

Could your project have to go through any environmental review?

Are there Health and/or Saftey issues that must be formally reviewing?

Is there any record of historical features, archeological finds, or native american artifacts on, or near, the site (so far)?

Are there neighbors that have to consent that it's visual/historic/other aspects do not offend their (delicate?) sensitivities? etc.

Are there any other features of the intended structure, site, and intended use, that must be formally reviewed?

Can you predict how your project will impact the ozone layer, etc.?

In any case, build legally, quickly, and safely, before new complications arrive....
