Wire Harness Spec MIL-C-45224D

01/02/2008 3:16 PM

This spec says it is inactive for new design. What spec should be used for a new design?

Thanks

Electrical missile system, very interesting. And Wow, this thing hasn't been around for almost 10 years!! Where did you find this reference? It obviously needs updating. You're right about not listing what superseded it though. It does mention a project 1410-0121 (which is a dead end also) but all the MIL specs are in PDF so using google or other search engines are useless. Just out of curiosity, what are you looking at this harness for??

I am responsible for the system. I have to sign the drawing that calls out this spec.

Have you looked into the guidance provided by MIL-HDBK-454 ? I did a quick read of the MIL-C-45224 and a lot of the entries are repeated in the handbook. However, since MIL-HDBK-454 is not to be listed in as a requirement, you should also review the J-STD-001D and J-STD-001DS. You might also want to look at MIL-HDBK-83575.

Good luck with your quest.

Thanks Brave. Yes, 454 is on the old drawing. The contractor deleted 454 and submitted a new drawing with 45224. Not sure why.

They probably deleted it because of the disclaimer printed on the cover page:

This handbook is for guidance only. Do not cite this document as a requirement.

Since MIL-C-45224D is a specification, it can be cited as a requirement on a CDRL (Contract Deliverable Requirements List) and can be used as a basis for quality inspections. However, the MIL-HDBK-454 can be listed as a reference on the parts list or assembly notes. We still leave 454 on our documents even though it cannot be used as an inspection criteria or a CDRL.

Take a look at IPC/WHMA-A-620, Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies. One of our process specs calls out this reference. I work for one of the major defense contractors in the US and we run into this issue of obselete references rather frequently.

Also check out Chapter 4.4 and 4.5 in the IPC-A-610D, Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies.

Thanks again Brave Sir. I am working on finding a way to acquire those specs, -not free on Haystack. But I don't see any HARM in asking the contractor if he has them. Thanks again for the info. btw, nice Avatar - do you know any silly walks? -PITB

No, I don't know any silly walks myself, but my comrade-in-arms, Sir Lancelot is quite good at them.

Does your company produce Wire Harnesses? The reason I ask is that I also have to do "Market Research" and find other companies that can produce this item for us.

I work for Northrop-Grumman. We produce our own wire harnesses for our products and we also contract out but I'm not sure who we use for those services.

Have you tried Googling in Russian or Chinese?
