Airbus Maiden Flight

04/26/2005 3:00 PM

Airbus' new super-jumbo jet is being readied for its maiden voyage in France on Wednesday. This is setting up to be the biggest aviation event since the Concorde's first flight in 1969. A slight change in the weather could further postpone Wednesday's flight, which is already about a month behind schedule. Lately, the A380 project has been plagued by weight problems, contributing to much of the 1.9 billion (US) overspend. Airbus still claims its new aircraft will carry passengers five percent farther and at a cost that is one-fifth of its rival's longest range jet, the Boeing 747.

Bumblebees

Like a bumblebee, the A380 looks like it shouldn't be able to fly - but it can. In terms of the super-jumbo's weight problems, I wonder if airports that accomodate the A380 will increase Airbus's gate fees to account for increased runway wear-and-tear. Airports that plan to accomodate these giants have already pledged to modify their terminals. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out financially for Airbus.

From what I understand, they are planning a second test flight where the airbus has to deal with serious weather and turbulence.

There will be many more test flights. The later flights will actually test the limits of the airplane and it's maneuvering abilities. They will be much more dangerous than the first.
