01/03/2008 11:55 PM

how do i design and install Lightning and Earthing protection system for off-shore structures for instance a pump house in sea, about 0.5 km away from shore. Pump house is equipped with 6.6 kV switchgear.

Not trying to be either funny or insulting, but, if you need to ask these questions, you are not the person to be designing what it is you are proposing to design.

Such a "sea terminal" is more then likely for a hydro-carbon based product, correct? If so, hydro-carbons, 6.6kV systems and lightning do not play well in the same sandbox and should not be played with unless you know all there is to know about the subjects!

I think it is a place for discussion. You can place a reply in an ethical and much professional way. i am sorry but i cannot understand your reply. Are you trying to convey that it cannot be designed.

I have already designed offshore grounding systems but i was looking for few improvements in the design. I think yoy have misinterpreted my question

Anyway thank you for your reply..

Well if you had of perhaps entered the forum and described to the group your previous exposure to such systems, the response you would have gotten may have been more to what you expected.

On this forum, we quite often see people with absolutely no experience at all asking how to do the most complicated things. Hence the nature of my reply to your question.

your question is vague.

lightning and earthing are two differnet concept.

what are you going to do? if you install lightning, yo0u have to transfer your voltage to low customers voltage, say 110 or 220v

if you hope to earth your pump house. try to get it at 0.5ohm grounding resistance. it will need you barrey a large grids. its belong to designer's job. the standard has differnet in different country

We have had excellent results with these folks http://lecglobal.com/ They have protected several structures for us (A major US Utility).
