Corrosion engineerm (pipeline corrosion control)

01/05/2008 7:40 AM

Hello All,

To my supprise since my graduation as a corrosion engineer with specialty "pipeline cathodic protection system" field survey and monitoring I have not been able to find a work. It seems mechanical engineers are also involved in corrosion protection or prevention since they deal with metals.

So in all corrosion engineer adverts, mechanical engineers are required.

1. So my question is where di I fit in?

2. Are people from the chemical engineering schools dont fit well in corrosion protection/prevention or what?

3. Is it my educational level that is the matter (PhD)?

But all my dream has been to working in the field or as we used to say "where it happens"

Please I need your advice, I am lost

Thanks

Ok you've been in school for many years.

You are going to need some new skills, which are not generally taught in the various courses You've taken thus far.

You will need to market yourself, to potential employers.

You will need a very good cover letter & resume. You may have to send 100's out, to even get 2or3 interviews. Keep refining your marketing tools & ask for feedback.

Since you have no experience, try to network with engineers in the field you are targeting. Contact the groups that engineers in your specialty belong to. Contact Recruiters, headhunters & employment agencies.

You will need to consider opportunities of a lower level or disiplines other than your primary choices.

your post shows a high level of panic. You will experience much more failure & rejection, then you ever have before. You will have to remain positive & confident!

You will need to project confidence, but not arrogance.

You are not unemployed, your job is finding a job! The pay sucks & there are no benefits.

Good luck

Since you have no experience............ I personally think that this is the key "NO EXPERIENCE," even though you have a PhD, you lack experience. Experience is the best teacher. A piece of paper does not maketh the man.

My advice, for what it is worth, is try to get a position in your required field, start at the bottom, get your hands dirty, gain experience, get promotion within the company. Hard work, knowledge and experience will enable you to use your degree as you climb the ladder to success and mark my words this will make you an engineer and not just an academic who doesn't know his arsehole from his elbow.

This may seem disappointing but that's the way it is.
