Viton Bonding?

01/07/2008 9:09 AM

Hello everyone.

I have two pieces of viton tubing that i want to bond together. The first one has a 1/4" OD 1/8" ID and the second one has a 1/8" OD 1/16" ID. I would like to insert one into the other, but I am having troubles finding and adhesive that will bond these two tubes. Please suggest some adhesives for me to try. Thank you.

Loctite 'glass bond' (usual disclaimer)?

RTV will hold modest pressure and full vacuum, provided you first clean and activate the surfaces with chlorinated solvent. The adhesive must remain flexible or the seal will rupture as the tubes flex with pressure and mechanical loads. DO NOT use this approach for dangerous, toxic, lethal materials or in a life safety critical application. LOW PRESSURE only.

If you need the chemical compatibility, see McMaster-Carr and search for Viton sealant. They carry products from www.pelseal.com .

Cyanoacrylate 'super-glue' will bond Viton very well but will leave you with a rigid joint that will not withstand flexing.

What makes Viton such a good sealing, O'Ring etc. material, being a fluoro polymer, also makes it almost impossible to bond. just like Teflon.

If your bond is critical in any way, or needs to remain flexible, I wouldn't do it. Instead I would go to mechanical linkage, like small bushing with or without outer crimped sleeve etc.

Hope it helps

I believe 3M 5200 polyurethane sealant will adhere to viton.

For a time, it will, but if the joint will be flexed or stressed in any way, 5200 will peel off eventually (days at most, but probably just a few flex cycles).

It sticks even less well to solid neoprene.

Looking at 3M 5200 spec sheet, Nope, I don't think it will do it. As a thermoset material, even thermal fusion won't. If temp's over 1350C, flexing, and high pressure are not required, than a simple TFE mandrel and heat shrink teflon tubing over it should work fine. And if you do find something that bonds to Viton for extended periods I'd like to know about it.

Have you considered using a push in barb reducer?
