Installing programs on an external hard drive

01/07/2008 4:51 PM

How can I install an application on an external hard drive when the program doesn't give me the option to choose the installation location. It automatically installs on the c drive.

Hello annerb

Do you have Admin rights on that Computer?

Are you using MS Windows (advise whether XP, Vista and actual type: Home, Pro, etc)?

Are you using Mac. computer, or Linux etc - Advise version)?

What Program are you attempting to instal?

Once we know that, you may be helped in more useful manner.

So........

I do have admin rights. I am running Vista, attempting to install Google talk on my hard drive so I can use it on multiple computers.

Hello again annerb,

The use of Vista in all the various sub-species of Vista, brings its own troubles, particularly in calling the MS "Mother Ship" sometimes hundreds of times each day, passing information about the user's PC and further details back to MS and their "Associates" whoever they may be, because you are never told......also preventing certain software from being installed, if it conflicts with MS and their Associates' Interests.

I do suppose that you do realize Google Talk is not particularly secure for communications, there are far better Utilities to use.

Mr, Google's product: Google Talk, is designed to install itself to the main Hard Drive = C: because if it is installed elsewhere, it may not be able to data-collect as often or as much as it would like.

It has been Google's policy from inception: Data shall never be deleted, but retained in perpetuity.

Kind Regards....

What you try to do won't work anyway. A program for Windows will install more stuff then what you can see in the Program File Folder. It'll install some library files inside Windows folder. Also install some registry entries. You'll have to install the program on each computer. You'll have to find a way to share the data if that's what you want to do.

You can try Mojopac www.technospot.net/blogs/carry-your-laptop-in-usb-drive-with-mojopac/

This will allow you to load your needed programs on either a flash drive or an external hard drive. It will not leave any residue on the host computer either.
