Looking For a Good Text Book on Basic Electronics

01/11/2008 2:24 PM

Hello all,

I can't believe it did not hit me to ask this question here. Probably saved me a ton of time!

So here is my issue. I have been asked to teach a class to our service technicians here at my job. I have plenty of old textbooks and materials that I can draw on. But my problem is this. The product we sell/install/repair is pretty specialized and for the most part sub-assembly repaired (NOT component level).

almost all the books I have and have seen so far are really quite involved. My guys don't need to learn about doping semi-conductors, or the formulas for Reactance...

What they do need to know is basic Ohm's law, Basic Motor theory, and Basic Electrical wiring.

I understand unless I develop a curriculum specifically for my company that there is going to be spill over in what ever I find book wise. But I was hoping not to spend allot of money on something that is just going to overwhelm these guys. But I would like it to encourage them to continue on in the book for their own benefit.

Anyone have any suggestions? or know of a good starter book? Oh and I don't want to spend more then about 20 bucks a book!

Thanks you guys here at CR4 are the best!

This is good...maybe a tad pricey, but covers an awful lot in a readable way from basics upto comlex stuff with circuit ideas and 'bad circuits' ! (To show common mistakes).. Maybe not suitable for all your class to buy..but good for you as a teacher...I still dip into my copy.

That's what I was going to recommend - and I'm a Mechie. I can't remember the book we were recommended in our first year (not sure I opened it). I was recommended H&H later by an electronics student.

A tad pricey and worth every penny.

I like one called "Practical Electronics for Inventors".

Do you have a Half Price Books or equivalent close by? I stop in once a month and look in their electronics section for low price bargains.

VERY familar with that book! I would love to find a book "like" this one...

This is a small corner of my world!

If it was only about 19.99 at amazon!

Any more Idea's Del? Oh and by the way...This copy is my second. I wore the spine out on my last one. I love this book!

this is what happens when you start a post and then walk away from it to actually work.

When you come back you finish your post without even thinking that five other people might have posted already!

Thanks for the links. I will check them all after hours. My slave driving...I mean...lovely boss needs me.

I over the years taken a few "Dumb John's" with high school educations and turned them into pretty good techs. You may have to write your own text book as you go. For example, the kids probably need Ohms law and the Power laws, but they might not need Thevenin's theorem. I am looking at text books I used back in college. I am looking at a 1st term Freshman year publication for me.

I seriously doubt that you will be able to find one text which can do the whole job, but write it as you go. It will be custom to your environment.

Sincerely

another Bill

i have been in the electrical instrumentation electronic induistrial computer field for 30 years.

Over and above the best books I have seen are

1. The Art of Electronics

2. The Art of Electronics handbook

used in combination.

Switchman,

Your a wealth of knowledge my friend. (good info on the Teco PLR in my other thread too...check there for further praise!)

I have not had the time to download them and go over it all but the enm.com link looks promising and has Bob Barker would say "the price is right."

I will check this out and let everyone know.

You might be able to use a circuit simulation program to train your students in very specific areas of electronics. Look a some circuit kit examples and the free simulation program at www.tier-2-innovation.com. It is easy to create your own circuit examples and show waveform results of proper operation.

I would also talk about safety. I know a lot of mechanical people, myself included, that known just enough about electricity to be dangerous.
