package heat pump head pressure issues

01/13/2008 12:59 AM

im dealing with a 5 ton lennox package heat pump that has me stumped ....

r-22 , back pressure is good at 48 # 40 deg ambient , head pressure runs at about 230 # , a bit high but when it comes out of a defrost and back into heating , the high side will slowly climb to 275 # and then settle down to 230 #. problem being the defrost term switch opens at 275 # and resets itself at 195 # therefore the switch does not reset and will not allow a defrost until pressure drops below the 195 # .

2700 cfm , filter , coil , registers all good , ive weighed out the charge and it was good , i presently have it operating with half the factory charge , compresser amps 12.3 \ 15 rla , delta t is 26 , pressures are 210 # over 45 # , amb is 40 , return air is 70 . there is no suction accumulator ?

Why is system operating with 50% factory charge? Non-condensible gases in the system will displace refrigerant in the condenser and cause abnormal head pressure. Was the system properly evacuated (500 microns vacuum)? Is there a pressure switch cycling the condenser fan and is it operating in proper range? Is the condenser fan operating at specified RPM (good run capacitor)? If 2700 cfm can be verified, then look for non-condesibles or a resricted filter drier and metering device (45# suction seems to low).

I agree with the previous reply sent by the other guest. Also I would have the reversing valve checked. These are notorious for causing problems. I am surprised that at 50% charge the low side even reads that high. It sounds to me the the system has been contaminated with air and or moisture.
