Making Stainless Steel Vacuum Flasks

01/14/2008 5:49 AM

It's often the daily things which make you wonder. For example : How is a stainless steel vacuum flask manufactured? Is it welded closed while inside an evacuated chamber? Why isn't there more heat transfer in the neck area where the inner and outer shell are fused together, - one would expect a metal bottle to transfer more heat over time than one made of glass. However, i find that the stainless steel flask is much better insulated than any glass flask i have come across so far.

It would be nice, to find pictures of the tooling and/or the manufacturing process. Has anyone got information on this?

Keep wondering!

yes, the components ( inner and outer shell) are probably deep drawn and/or rolled. But how do the makers of those miraculous flasks go on from there?

Some insulated bags simply use metalized polyethylene foam. Re flasks, they probably use fiberglass fill. The one used for refrigirators.

So is the term "vacuum" flask a generic term, whereas it is not literally a vacuum, but merely insulated? How much additional insulation is gained by having a vacuum as opposed to air inside the void? Are there "vacuum" windows on homes? What about the space shuttle or airliners? I should know the specs of airline windows, but strangely, that bit of information has never entered my mind.

Personally, I doubt that a Dewar flask is inferior to a SS "vacuum" flask in any way, given that the former are used for storage of cryogenic liquids.
