Hopefully, This Won't Be A Tera'flop'

Europe's newest and biggest supercomputer will "process signals from up to 13 billion light years from earth." The article states that it will form the heart of a new type of radio telescope.

So, who out there believes that we will receive a message in those signals from space within our lifetime? - a la 'Contact'. Or will we have to, in another hundred years or so, "go" out there to find other signs of intelligent life?

I do not expect to see any results from a SETI type program with the present equipment and search parameters. First of all, there is a narrow band (compared to the age of the universe) of time in which you can expect a civizilation to broadcast on the standard airwaves. With that limitation you can rule out recieving anything from any civizilation that is significantly younger or older than ours is right now. Any advanced civizilation that is communicating among themselves if they have FTL travel capability is certainly going to use a FTL communications system too. One possibility that comes to mind is using the "instantanious" link between paired particles. Lets face it, if you can travel many light years in a matter of days or weeks you would not be able to stay in contact with your home base with relativisticaly limited communications. Even without FTL travel any meaningful communication would still have to be based on some quantum quirk like the paired particle connection. Until we figure out how to communicate without the limitation of light speed we are not going to be able to tap into the universes message system. That is assuming one even exists.

One of my favorite movie scenes is from The Mothman Prophecies. In it, the protagonist (played by Richard Gere) asks why the Mothman, a mysterious entity, hasn't just announced himself. "Would you explain yourself to a cockroach?" is the answer Gere received.
