Total harmonic distortion

Guys,

Is it necessery to install filter harmonic in power line or not?

What is the criteria or maximum accepted harmonic power (The total power to generate harmonic in power system) and safe for our equipement?

Is there any regulation about this issue?

Hi,

You may use the IEEE std 519-1992, IEEE Recommended Practices and Requirements for Harmonic Control in Electrical Power Systems.

total distotion shall not be more than 5% .

also individual harmonic shall not increase as below:

3rd harmonic ------44% of fundamental

5th ---33%,7th ----18%,9th----7%% 11th----10%

It is also dependant on the use of the power. An electric heater or lights are less effected than test or computer equipment.

Harmonics are generated by switching power supplies;UPS, Inverters, Rectifiers, AC Motor drives, variable frequency drives, electronic ballasts. If you do not have such systems at your site, then you are safe.

the total power do not generate harmonics.

If you are in doubt, use harmonic analyser; single harmonic and total harmonics.

In 3 phase 4 wire supply, neutral get hot due to harmonics.
