Screen Bowl vs. Pusher Centrifuges

01/16/2008 10:39 AM

Hello All,

We currently operate 6 BIRD screen bowl centrifuges for the dewatering of potash slurry from a crystallized pond product (solution mine). The process involves dredging the material from the pond and pumping to pond storage tanks, it is then pumped to the plant to a another storage tank where the slurry is pumped to a cyclone and then to the screen bowl centrifuge. The screen bowl centrifuge solid product is then dried in a rotary dryer and then processed. The % solids and particle size of the feed stream can vary depending the outside temperature, location of the dredged product, and the concentration of the KCl.

We are planning an expansion (adding two more centrifuges and another dryer) to increase capacity and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with pusher centrifuges and screen bowl centrifuges. There are a few advantages of a pusher over a screen bowl but I am concerned with the amount of maintenance that a pusher may need. Does anyone have operational/maintenance experience with this type of machine and if so what is your opinion?

Thanks,

SPOD

We ran several different sizes for the solid bowl (pusher) Birds for many years. Typically were pushing 30-40,000 pounds per hour dry basis through each at 21-24 percent water in the wet cake.

The issues were maintaining the planetary gearbox and maintain the watching the torque between the scroll and the bowl. Is you haven't looked at these there is quite a lot of thrust and heat generated from the scroll pushing the solids "up the beach" or into the narrow end of the bowl.

We ended up going from one to two and finally to three helix's or leads in the scroll. Also did quite a bit of work changing the ratios of the scroll to bowl speed. I Liked them better than the screens and thought I had much better product recovery. Your application may not require better recovery, or the dry wet cake.

Rates and performance did depend on the morphology of the product and, end result desired as well as the water in the incoming product.

We also found some of the wetting agents helped with water removal were not cost justified.

We searched the would for parts years ago. Do you have a good source?

Dear Paddler: I can assist with supply of surplus reconditioned Bird solid bowl, screen bowl or pusher centrifuges. Please let me know what your requirements are. Also, I am looking to purchase any surplus Bird pushers you may have or know of for a similar application.
