Wire EDM heat (heat affected zone)

01/17/2008 10:15 AM

Guys,

Can ye settle an agrument. What is the minimum size of the recast layer & heat affected zone achieved when wiring (EDM) a finishing cut on say: a punch 5mmx5mmx50mm. Pre-hardened D2 57-60HRC.

I do not have setting for the wire machines finishing cut - general answer will suffice

This argument arose when deciding to use the punches without finishing grinding.

Regards

Jon

you will have a problem on the sharpness of the cutting edge if you do a wirecut finish not only the surface finish but also on the hardness.

I think on newer machines it can be as low as .0001" and on older machines it is more like .001" to .002".
