IBR(Indian boiler regulations) scope for a pressure vessel equipment

01/19/2008 12:27 PM

Hiiiiiii frnds,

I have a process data sheet of a shell and tube heat exchanger which states the tube side service as "MP steam".TheMP steam pressure is specified as 7 kg/cm2(g),dia of tube side inlet nozzle is 2",and channel dia is 400mm.

The exchanger is to be installed in one of the Essar oil refinery-India(vadinar).How to find out if the exchanger comes under IBR purbiew?

Also I have read in IBR code that:To classify a line as IBR:Either of the two conditions have to be met:

1-Line pressure greater than or equal to 3.5 kg/cm2(g)

2-Line size greater than 254 mm.

Now:Is the above criteria applicable for vessels as well?

Thank you......and lets start the session :)

Hi,

The IBR regulation states that the liquid holding capacity of a NON IBR has to be less than 22 (Twenty two ) liters of water.

Heat exchangers, where steam is used as heating medium, are considered as "User" of steam and Users of steam are not under the purview of IBR,1950.

Examples:

Steam heating coils immersed in oil storage tank

Steam turbine

Steam engine

However, Heat Exchangers connected to boiler feed water are under the purview of IBR, 1950 since as per definition of feed-pipe given in IBR, 1950 "feed-pipe means any pipe or connected fitting wholly or partly under pressure through which feed-water passes directly to a boiler. The heat exchangers connected to feed-water are considered as connected fitting.

Hiii frnd

IBR States that "Any Equipment which is connected though Steam Generation Unit Will be under IBR if It's Steam Generator Unit (Boiler) is come under IBR. If it's boiler is not IBR whatever your pressure it doesn't come under IBR.

The deciding factor for BOILER that it comes under IBR or not is : It's Process volume Not Pressure.

Now we are talking about Heat Exchanger in this case so first u have to ask Owner that is this Exchager is connected to Any IBR Boiler and is this unit is used for condensation after use of Process steam?

Than IBR provides the convienient that any condensation unit (Containing steam of IBR Boiler only) containing Pressure less than 3.5kg/cm2 doesn't come in catagory of IBR, but if it's More than that it strictly come under IBR

Regards

B.Y.

Can you please provide reference clause no. of IBR?

3.5 kg/cm2 is design pressure / operating pressure?

What about if we are using steam as heating medium in excahnger which comes from IBR boiler & Which is directly not connected with boiler. In this kind of cases how we consider IBR is applicable or not?

A system is Non IBR if

a) The boiler is non IBR

b) Steam pressure is below 3.5 bar

c) Condensate is non-steam (ie water)

d) It is the last valve before process equipment (which will always be Non-IBR)

e) In case of boiler, its capacity is >22.5liter of water.

f) It includes along with boilers - its mountings, distribution pipes (steam), valves, strainers, HE etc all - subject to the above conditions.

Is IBR applicable for Steam Ejectors?

Is IBR applicable for Steam Vent Silencer?

It will be agood practice to Obtain at least IBR IIIC CERTIFICATES FOR ALL ATTACHMENTS TO BOILER.

This will avoid any problems with the authority in India and may end up unit being rejected.

If the process requirement calls for usage of Cupro Nickel tubes in an IBR exchanger (Tube side IBR), is there any provision in IBR that allows such usag. Or else, is there any provisions that allows designer to tak ASME for cases not specified in IBR..

We are building a Boiler with following details :

1. Boiler Capacity : 3 liters

2. Pressure : 8 bar

3. Maximum Boiler Temperature : 180 C

4. Steam Generation : 5.5 kg/hr

Will this boiler be under IBR ?

The application is sanitizing for medical purposes.

Please help.
