Superconductivity Research

01/22/2008 12:00 PM

Could CR4 knowledgeable persons give a posting on the "state of the science" of superconductivity? I heard at one point that a city in China was on the virge of utilizing a superconducting power distribution system for local power distribution. Has that happened?
It seems to me that superconductivity has a great potential for eliminating local pollution and reducing energy demands not only as it applies for electrical power to homes/factories, but also for (electric) automobiles if proper systems can be developed.

I just returned from Beijing and other assorted points in China, particularly in the south, where local governments have the full blessings of "Central Government", and greedy commercial industry to blow the US manufacturers out of the competition with an assortment of RE producing products that US Energy companies just want to go away until they are finished sucking the lifeblood from our economy...at least they'll manage to force us to wait another generation or two before they stop blocking the production of these technologies in the US markets. Please pay attention...watch the market..and put you money into any American made products that are ramping up to release thin film organic solar products to the market. Check it out before it becomes more common knowledge.

I am naive to this internet thing and looking up stuff such as this. Where can I find info for this? Thanks, Ferris

Hello Ferris

Use an Internet Search Engine, such as Google.

Internet Search Engines have automated webcrawlers, (spiders) which periodically visit most websites, and copy the contents to the Search Engine Cache = (Local Copy)

As a result, websites which are often clicked on, after being located through a Search Engine, get visited more frequently, and their contents updated more often in the Search Engine Cache (Local Copy).

Google Search Engine has a small Window Slot, into which you type the "Search Terms" you want to locate.

So....Into Google Search Engine you could type: superconducting cable (Please note that I've bolded those two words to make it easy, they do not have to be bolded in the Search Engine "Search Slot".

The Search Engine spins the gears, searching through it's Cache, and up pops a new page, showing the results: Results 1 - 10 of about 193,000 for superconducting cable. (0.18 seconds)

The above shows how many entries in the Cache, and how long the Search took.

Then it may be helpful to reduce the number of entries, after all, you do not want to read 193,000 entries, do you.

So some careful thought is needed: You have to know what you are looking for, or else it cannot be found.

Another Search using: superconducting cable development new gives: Results 1 - 10 of about 35,800 for superconducting cable development new. (0.26 seconds)

And if I want further details, perhaps I do my next Search with: Results 1 - 2 of 2 for "superconducting cable development" new testing stage. (0.10 seconds) - Note that I put the first three words as "superconducting cable development" adding the new testing stage but not in quotation marks.

So that last Search gives: Results 1 - 2 of 2 for "superconducting cable development" new testing stage. (0.10 seconds)

So as you can see, careful use of a short phrase in quotation marks: "xxxxxx xxxxx" can swiftly reduce the number of pages located in the Search Engine local cache.

If you want the Cache version, click on "Cached" or if the updated Webpage, click on the actual Link shown.

Search Engines make things easier, because much of the work is done.

The Internet is like a vast Library, and you need some help, or a system of locating what you want to read.

If you need further help, just ask.

Cheers and Kind Regards....

Hello Guest,

The superconductive Power distribution cables idea was mooted years ago, and in spite of earnest development, is still only in the development phase.

Refer: PRUAB scientists to build the first electricity network superconductor cable of Southern Europe

Note that is for a single 30 metre length of cable, and is really only experimental.

The main problem with energy is that it is generally available far from where it is needed.

At present, I cannot foresee when or if a superconductive electric car would ever be a practical proposition.

The specialist materials required, the risk of violent explosion if cooling failed, and other factors rule out a mobile superconductive car for the general populace, far into the future.

Kind Regards....

Two points:

EPRI spent years looking at distribution of electricity using superconductors. There is a wealth of info available.

A superconducting motor in a car will have to operate in some type of ac mode and will possibly not be as lossless as you think.
