Blending Pictures and WiFi

04/19/2006 11:20 AM

It had to happen. Wireless networking has entered the consumer digital camera market with new products from Nikon that use WiFi to send your snapshots to your PC. After reading this review, you may want to add the camera to your wish list.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" article from the May edition of the Networking & Communications newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on communications industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Networking & Communications today.

WiFi vs Bluetooth

04/19/2006 2:46 PM

Why would I want a WiFi enabled camera when Bluetooth (designed SPECIFICALY as a cable replacement) is so readily available. It uses less power and poses less of a security risk. Last thing I want on vacation is someone messing with my photos.

WiFi is a good idea!

Why WiFi? Because Bluetooth is as slow as molasses when it comes to data transfers. Due to the added expense of WiFi, it will likely only be found in higher end cameras capable of taking very large (in both area and file size) photos. I for one don't want to download 100 megs of photos at about 125KB/sec that bluetooth offers. WiFi is an ideal solution. At the very least you will be able to get 10 times the bandwidth. Security while out and about? Power down the WiFi module and it is a non issue.

I guess that I don't care if it takes 15 min for my pictures to download of the camera. If it needs to be faster I'd just use the USB port. I still have a dock for my PDA and I have few issues with it.
Of course I use my digital camera maybe 4 times per year and tend to just take the memory stick out and put it into my computer.

Skeptical

Unless I read the wrong review, I wouldn't classify this article as a ringing endorsement. I'm all for ease of use - with or without wires.
