01/23/2008 9:53 AM

hi

i am looking to understand the material in the super ball. i want to coat my hockey stick blade for long lasting (better than the d... tape) and probably better shot. any ideas ? it would be glued onto a carbon blade or a fiberglass.

So, you want high rebound with superior abrasion resistance - sounds like a urethane to me. Try one of the roll-on truck bed liner kits; you'll be able to control coating thickness as well as surface texture. I would prep your stick with a little acetone to clean and "activate" the surface for best adhesion. Urethane has the added benefit of shedding water and ice really well. Go Avalanche!

I'm sorry, you got it wrong, i think the Avalanche is a pick up truck, not a team. Lots of rubber and poly. on it, like on a goaly stick giving lots of rebounds ... go Red Wings or go Habs , yes i am a h....r and a Patriot. I hated the Nordiques ... now we have regrets.

Thanks

That's okay - nobody's perfect!

Good luck with your project - let me know how it works.

According to wikipedia, the super balls are made from a polybutadiene, vulcanized with sulfur. I'm not sure exactly where you'd get polybutadiene to shape it yourself, but it's worth a shot.

Props to previous poster with using acetone to clean and "activate" the surface of the stick. :)

The only team I know is 'The Broomhill County Dusters' near NY in Endicot! Haven't seen them play in 34 years but I used to go every week!

Wouldn't the Super ball material cause you problems with the puck handling aspect of the game? I could see where it would help when you take a shot but trying to stop the puck from bouncing off the stick every time you tried to touch it would be imposable.

The trick would be to find something that allowed you to handle the puck but at the same time give you a little more umph when you take the shot.

Plus aren't there rules about what you can use on the stick?

I've seen stuff that says superballs are made from silicate rubber. It's easy to synthesize.

I think it'll be hilarious to watch when you go to take that first slapshot and the stick bounces out of your hands. You should probably also consider how much weight thats going to add to your stick. Bearing that in mind, go get yourself some wooden blades and replace them as needed.

But if your heart is set on improving blade durabillity, consider using a 2 part urathane epoxy paint. Very durable, with less bounce.
