DC VOLTAGE HOT STICK

01/25/2008 12:35 PM

I'm looking for a hot stick to test for medium DC voltage. My application is to test the DC Link in a VFD.

I'm not too sure what you mean by a 'hot stick', is it one of those pens that detact an electromagnetic field and light up to warn you? because if so they are readily available.

Or could it be one of those high voltage probes to add on to a multimeter to measure voltages up to 10s of kiloVolts?

Either way, your question needs a bit of explanation added.... i would guess that the VFD could be a Variable Frequency Drive, but it could also mean a Vacuum Fluorescent Display, of alot of others!!

John.

A hot stick is used to detect voltage either by indicating the level or by signaling voltage is present. It is a safety device to determine the circuit is dead prior to working on it. There are a number of alternating current 'hot sticks' on the market but I haven't found one that can be used for direct current applications. The VFD is a variable frequency drive. Sorry for the confusion. I have a medium voltage drive so I would need something more than a dmm or analog meter. The level indication is not important just that there is voltage present. I haven't seen an add on dc kv probe or if they are available. That's worth looking into, thanks for your post.
