Outdoor enclosure help

01/31/2008 1:28 PM

Our company is trying to source outdoor enclosures for one of our products. Because our device is a large-ish floorstanding unit that requires full access to all four sides and the top, finding something suitable has turned out to be difficult.

The enclosure doesn't have to be particularly watertight - just generally weather resistant. Ideally we'll also be able to heat the inside since our device must be protected against freezing. And of course "cheaper is better".

Right now, the best option I can think of are those plastic / fiberglass tilt-back or lift-off "clamshell" type outdoor enclosures you sometimes see. However, I can't seem to locate a source for these. Possibly they have a common industry term that I don't know to look for?

BTW, our device is roughly 4ft L x 2ft W x 4ft H. And we're located in the United States.

If anyone can suggest some sources for these enclosures or come up with a better option, we'd be thankful.

I used a beast something like that for a moisture detector about 6 years ago. I never saw a standard product line, so we had them made. Think about having it fastened in several places and open one side at a time; you can't believe what a 40 mph wind will do with that baby. Also, you're gonna want insulation on the inside. I have also seen a thermal blanket affair with wire standoffs used for that kind of thing but don't remember where to get one made; check GlobalSpec.

For plastic, start with your local GE plastics supply. They typically have a good bunch of fabricators in their rolodex.

Another guy worth talking to is Brad Shields at

www.racingshields.com

His specialty is Indy car parts, but he knows one heckuva lot about forming plastics and might be convinced to help you.

There's also a mold house in Texas (sorry, don't remember the name) that does the majority of the hot tub liners in the US, if you can track that down.

Check out the products supplied by HotBox. I have used their stuff several times and have always been very satisfied with the quality and construction. The model range and options are very comprehensive. Good luck!

I agree, HotBox is expensive, but you do get what you pay for. At the end of every job I've used their products on, I've never regretted my choice.

What's your target cost (without heater)? I work with several fabricators and could probably supply you with what you want.

www.ddbunlimited.com They can custom make enclosures to fit your specific needs. They have heating and cooling options. These are NEMA rated enclosures. Reasonably priced as well.
